Getting a college education can be one of the most rewarding experiences in a person’s life. Bellevue Community College, also known as BC, is a public open-access community college found in Bellevue, Washington. BC’s serves the Bellevue district that includes Bellevue itself, Issauqah, Skykomish, Snoqualmie Valle, and Mercer Island. The school was established in 1966 and will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in the 2015-2016 school year.
Bellevue Community College was founded by the Bellevue School District, as a secondary education institution for residents of the Washington. The college opened with just over 450 students and a little over 30 instructors. The first curriculum included classes in the English, social sciences, botany, physics, and trigonometry. Vocational classes that were offered included food service management, nursing, and basic aircraft blueprint reading.
The first class of BC graduated in 1967, with 10 students who graduated with degrees and certificates and 15 students graduating with high school diplomas. The school recently changed its name from Bellevue Community College to simply Bellevue College. This was to show that they school is now awarding 4-year bachelor’s degrees to go along with their traditional 2 year associate degrees and certificates. Bellevue College’s instructional programs are made up of 5 major divisions. These are Social Science; Health Sciences, Education and Wellness Institute; Institute for Business and Information Technology; and Science.
The main BC campus includes a baseball field called Courter Field that could seat around 1,000 spectators, a gymnasium that could seat 2,500 spectators, soccer field, and the Courter Family Athletic Pavilion. Campus athletic facilities include a 1,000-seat baseball field (Courter Field), a soccer field, and the Courter Family Athletic Pavilion, which contains a 2,500-seat gymnasium. Bellevue Community College is a member of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges, or the NWAACC. The school fields teams in several sports including baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, golf, and tennis. The school colors are blue and white and the school nickname are the Bulldogs.
